Racism Does Exist!

The picture above may say it all. Why was a person of color, jogging down a road, and followed by armed white individuals shot down? Why did it take 74 days for arrests to be made? Would this have happened if the person who was shot was white? Racism does exist in our community, in our world.

Racism takes many forms. It includes prejudice, discrimination, or hatred toward a person because of their color, ethnicity or nationality. It’s not just acts of abuse or harassment. It can be in the form of racial name-calling and jokes. Or, how about situations when people are excluded from groups or activities because of where they come from. Racism can be shown through people’s attitudes. And, not all racism is obvious. For example, someone may look through a list of job applicants and decide not to interview a person who has a certain surname. Racism prevents people from enjoying and having dignity and equality.

I know that there are individuals out there that don’t see it or they believe that racism doesn’t exist. There are those that wonder why ‘we can’t just get over it’. I’m a woman of color who has experienced racism and felt less than because of it. Don’t ever tell me that racism doesn’t exist or that I need to get over it! I hope that in both of my daughter’s lifetimes they can experience a world filled with unconditional love.

“I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality. I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word.” — Martin Luther King, Jr.

  1. Thank you for your thoughts and insights. You are a beautiful woman in ALL ways… always!

  2. Thank you Linda for your insightful comment… As a woman of color I also know, live, experience racism in some form or another. I fear daily for my beautiful educated respectful black son/nephews and all my brothers and sister having a negative interaction with the police and not survive it.. I try to be a shining light of what humanity should represent and not just by the color of my skin but the content of my character.. we took a knee but that wasn’t heard or good enough.. now the voiceless is being heard.. pray this is the end of America and all other countries who practice white supremacy and oppression ends their reign of tyranny ?

    • Sherrie,
We can only hope that the people of our world will finally see that we all can live equally in brotherhood and sisterhood. Thank you for all your support.

      Linda
