Community

When it comes to joining together to make our neighborhoods, our cities, and our world better, one of the most important things we can do to make this happen is to find out what we all have in common. Unfortunately, as a community, what we all have in common right now is that we are all in this fight against the coronavirus. I feel that community becomes even more powerful when it includes the entire community. When all members of the community pull together for a united cause, the power becomes unlimited.

I do hear and see examples of people coming together. I see my neighbors helping those that are not able to help themselves by picking up groceries, medications, or just calling to check on their fellow neighbors. To lift spirits, I’ve heard stories of the Italian people (and now others around the world) stepping out onto their balconies singing and playing instruments with one another. Retired doctors and nurses are going back to work. And with the shortage of masks, people are pulling out their sewing machines to put together what’s in short supply. Anything and everything helps. As President Obama said recently, “In America, we all share the responsibility of looking out for one another. That’s never more true than in times like right now.”

I, like you, crave that connection with other people. I miss breaking bread, having a glass of wine, and sitting across the table from my family and friends having a conversation. We do what we can via Zoom or some other app, but it’s not the same. But if we don’t come together as a community and do our part by staying home and social distancing, life as we know it will only get worse and we’ll all be dealing with this for months and months to come. It’s essential that we all work together to get to the other side of this. It takes everyone’s participation.  #togetherapart

My hope is that when this does end and we do get to the other side of this, the lesson we all come to learn is that we can no longer take our family, our friends, our community, our world, and our way of living for granted. Everything can change in an instant. Let’s all work together!

“Alone, we can do so little. Together, we can do so much.” — Helen Keller
