Why am I writing on the subject of racism again? Because I am pissed off! Racism is still systemically ingrained in our society, and now it is more blatant and overt than ever. You see it with the visibility of more and more white supremacists. They are no longer in the shadows. (I will never forget January 6th.) Voting rights are under attack nationwide, now more than ever, as states try to pass voter suppression laws. These laws will only lead to significant burdens for eligible voters, most of whom are people of color. Everyone has the constitutional right to vote.
I don’t know if any of you watched the Oprah interview with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. I did. I thought it would be a little break or a little respite from our nation’s news, but far from it. Again, racism back in our faces, and coming from across the pond. I found myself truly upset, and even in tears. And now, so many of our Asian American community are being attacked and killed. When will it all end?
When will people in this nation, in this world, stop believing that a person’s race determines their worth and abilities? When will ignorance and fear end? When will we end the systems in place that create and maintain racial inequality in almost every facet of life for people of color? I don’t see it happening in my lifetime, but I hope there will be a significant change in my daughters’ lifetime. I can only hope that the following dream of Martin Luther King, Jr. comes true.
“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” – Martin Luther King, Jr
