The words “be kind” are all over social media these days. Why is it that we see and hear these words now more than ever? Is it because of the state of our nation and world? With that, does that mean we all need to work harder at being a good neighbor?
With the loss of Kobe Bryant, his daughter, and seven other individuals, it got me thinking about how life is so short and can change in an instant. I thought about how I want to live my life and how I would want to be remembered. One of the things I want to be known for is being a kind person.
Kindness is defined as the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate. When I think of kindness, I also think of words like affection, warmth, concern, and care. It’s really hard for me to understand how a person can not be kind to another individual. Even though I hear the words being used more, the actual acts of kindness could be more commonplace. It doesn’t take much to show that you are a kind person. After all, wouldn’t you want to be treated with kindness?
Here are a few ways you can show a little kindness to that person next to you.
- Smile because you can make someone’s day a little brighter.
- Just listen.
- Offer a hug or embrace.
- Invite someone new into your friend tribe.
- Send out a kind email or card.
- Give someone a genuine compliment.
- Open your eyes and be active when you see someone who needs your help. I think a community is created or built when people are kind to those who need help.
And, Remember kindness includes being kind to yourself. Do you treat yourself kindly? Do you take good care of yourself? Being kind to yourself helps keep your mind and body strong and healthy, which means that you can give more and be kind to others. In my opinion, being kind to yourself every day of your life is one of the best things you can do for yourself.
