Action

Do not let fear be your guide. If you want to get ahead, make strides in your life, or make a change professionally, you must take a step forward — it’s as simple as that. For some of us, the physical aspect is the easy part. It’s the mental aspect that keeps us riveted in place. For others, it’s the other way around. Both can be debilitating and allow you to find reasons why you can’t do this or that. What if we stopped overthinking and just did? What if we stopped saying “I can’t” and started saying “I can!”

I can tell you what will happen. You will have accomplished what you set out to do. No bells will sound, no alarms will go off, and the world will continue to spin. The most important thing you will realize is that you can do anything you want. The power is in your hands, and no one is stopping you. You can do it.

In the last several years, I have chosen a “word of the year.” You select one single word to be your focus for the year. You can use that word to set goals or intentions for each area of your life but have them all tie back to the single word. This year my word is “Action”.

/ˈakSHən/

     a: A thing done.

b: The accomplishment of a thing.

     c: Actions plural: Behavior, Conduct.

     d: Initiative, Enterprise.

I am not a loner, but I do enjoy my time alone. I love being around people, but there’s a limit to my extrovert side. I have difficulty engaging with total strangers unless I host an event or teach. I hate going out to eat alone and won’t go to the movies alone. I am incredibly uncomfortable in group settings where I know no one. I would never go on vacation by myself as much as I envy the women who do.

But that ends this year. When I put my mind to something, I do it. If I want something, I go after it. Accomplishing something I was once afraid of makes me feel alive. 2023 will be the year of taking the initiative and achieving my goals. My plan is simple: I plan my week and weekend with what I want to accomplish and what I feel comfortable doing, but I leave myself open to be spontaneous if my day flows smoothly. I also pack my car with extra clothing and items that will allow me to be available for a change in plans so I don’t have to go home and waste time.

I plan my weekends to ensure I explore new areas and do new things. I want to meet new people and get over my fears. I am taking myself out to eat, and guess what? It’s not scary at all. I am great company, and I love people-watching. I like that I don’t have to wait on anyone. I can explore and spend as much or as little time someplace as I wish. I can change my plans at a moment’s notice, and no one gets upset or complains.

I am also creating a digital vision board. This is a great way to manifest your goals and slide into the action mindset. Another nice thing about the digital vision board is that you can easily update it as you think of something. They are mobile and easily accessible. You don’t need a million magazines to find what you want. The world is filled with inspiration. You have to open your eyes and look.

Most importantly, inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit at home and think about it. Go out and get busy. — Dale Carnegie
